The 17-year-old high school student Oliver Rother likes to express his thoughts, feelings and experiences in hip-hop lyrics. When his teacher Selma Vollrath gives him a failing grade for a German assignment on "The Sorrows of Young Werther" that he wrote in the style of a rapper, he leaves the class disappointed and angry. In the process, he loses a note in which he announces in a drastic song that he wants to kill Mrs. Vollrath. Out of fear of having a potential school shooter in the building, the school administration informs the police. When they find violent videos on Oliver's computer during a house search and the teenager does not clearly distance himself from his statements, an unexpected drama unfolds.
