On a remote island off the western coast of Australia in the early 1920s, lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne and his wife discover a washed-up boat containing a dead man and a newborn baby. They decide to raise the child as their own, unaware of the devastating consequences that will follow when they encounter the biological mother years later.
